Waiting on Wednesday – The Crown’s Game

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine. It features upcoming releases that we are super excited for.

The Crowns Game

Title: The Crown’s Game
Author: Evelyn Skye
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Date Published: May 17, 2016
Synopsis from Goodreads:Vika Andreyeva can summon the snow and turn ash into gold. Nikolai Karimov can see through walls and conjure bridges out of thin air. They are enchanters—the only two in Russia—and with the Ottoman Empire and the Kazakhs threatening, the Tsar needs a powerful enchanter by his side.

And so he initiates the Crown’s Game, an ancient duel of magical skill—the greatest test an enchanter will ever know. The victor becomes the Imperial Enchanter and the Tsar’s most respected adviser. The defeated is sentenced to death.

Raised on tiny Ovchinin Island her whole life, Vika is eager for the chance to show off her talent in the grand capital of Saint Petersburg. But can she kill another enchanter—even when his magic calls to her like nothing else ever has?

For Nikolai, an orphan, the Crown’s Game is the chance of a lifetime. But his deadly opponent is a force to be reckoned with—beautiful, whip smart, imaginative—and he can’t stop thinking about her.

And when Pasha, Nikolai’s best friend and heir to the throne, also starts to fall for the mysterious enchantress, Nikolai must defeat the girl they both love… or be killed himself.

As long-buried secrets emerge, threatening the future of the empire, it becomes dangerously clear… the Crown’s Game is not one to lose.

I am seriously SO excited for The Crown’s Game!! I’ve already pre-ordered it and I’ve been a loyal member of the Tsar’s Guard for around a year now! The history and culture of Russia has always fascinated me. Growing up, my mother collected matryoshka dolls that I loved to play with. For some reason taking them all apart and putting them back together was so fun! Her pièce de résistance was a set of dolls with a scene from a Pushkin story on each one. I attempted to get a picture for this post but it seems they’ve gone missing since she passed away 2.5 years ago. In my 5th grade class, parent volunteers would come in and either teach us something or help us build a craft. My mother, the amazing woman that she was, brought in styrofoam eggs, sequins, ribbon, and pins and helped us create our very own Fabergé eggs! Here’s an example and a tutorial in case you’d like to try it yourself! I think the kids and I might do this soon! The Chic

When I lost my mom in November of 2013, I wanted to get a tattoo in her memory, my first tattoo to be precise. I could think of nothing better than a matryoshka doll. So I had one of my best friends draw it up, and here it is!

Now you can somewhat understand the extreme level of my excitement when I first heard about The Crown’s Game, then known as The Tsar’s Game. Then I started reading about all the characters during the big monthly reveals on Evelyn Skye’s beautiful website, and wow did my excitement grow! Amazing characters, awesome Russian setting, and fascinating magic, what more could I ask for!?

  • Katie says:

I am also SUPER excited for this book. I got behind on reading because uni and graduation the last few months, so I probably won’t be able to grab it the second it comes out (I NEED to read A Court of Mist and Fury first<3) but I will definitely be grabbing it this summer!

You'll probably be interested in my WoW choice (or its predecessor if you haven't read the first one yet!)

  • One week more! And my ARC is telling me to read it. 😓

    My WoW.
